Horror Films

Aliens

There was four films in total that were made of this series of films. There is a lot of action in these films as well as a lot of gore. Sigourney Weaver is brilliant in all of these films. If you have not seen any of these films yet then make sure you watch at least one of them.

Three people watching a horror movie in a cinema

The Shining

Jack Nicholson is scary throughout this film. He is a man who travels to hotel in the mountains with his family so that he can finish writing a book.

He is under immense pressure to finish it and as it turns out he cracks up. There are a number of scenes that will freak you out throughout this film.

Psycho

There was a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's original Psycho but the original is better. The story is about a man called Norman Bates who runs a motel where an unsuspecting woman stays in. There is a famous gory shower scene. If you have not seen this film then buy it today and watch it. You will not be disappointed.

The Ring

There are two versions of this film, one is Japanese and the other is American. Both versions are scary but the American version is a little bit better. It has to be one of the most freakiest films that has been released in the past 10 years.

The Omen

This film is about the son of the devil who is brought into the living world by an unsuspecting couple. The child's name is Damien and as he gets older, people start to die in unusual ways.

Any horror film that has a child as the main focus within it is freaky enough and this film does not disappoint.

A man watching a scary movie on his computer

Hostel

Some people argue that this movie is more of a blood fest than a horror. Then again when Quentin Tarrantino is the special guest director, this is normal. This movie is a terrifying movie. A number of backpackers are inter-railing through Europe and stay in a hostel in Slovakia that doesn't turn out to be that cozy. Check this film out if you are not too squeamish.

The Exorcist

This film was banned in some countries when it first came out. I have to admit when I watched it I did not see what all the fuss was about. However I have to admit it is a really good film as some of the camera shots are brilliant. The film is all about a young girl who becomes possessed by the devil. Her mother is unsure as to why her daughter is acting in such a strange way and finally decides to hire an exorcist. If you like horror films and you have not seen this legendary movie yet then check it out!!

Session 9

This movie is about a team of asbestos removal workers who are hired to remove asbestos from an old Psychiatric Hospital. As the team members start to work they start to hear strange voices and sounds. As the film continues each team member starts to be killed off by a mysterious assailant. I remember when I first watched this and it scared the living daylights out of me. In my opinion any film that is set in an old Psychiatric Hospital has the makings of a legendary horror movie. The film also stars the now legendary actor David Caruso (Horatio) from CSI Miami fame.

House of Wax

When I first heard about this movie, I promised myself I would never watch it as it didn’t look great. However, I ended up watching it and to my amazement it was a legendary horror film, which took me by complete surprise. The film is set around the usual “group of friends on a road trip” theme. One of their cars breaks down and they then notice that there is a town close by. The town is not an ordinary town as everything is made from wax i.e. buildings, people etc. As some of the friends decide to explore the town it leads to a number of gory deaths. If you haven’t seen this movie yet then check it out.

The Lost Boys

This is a classic 80's horror movie about vampires. It is set in a small town in America and when a new family moves there to stay with their grand-father. One night the eldest son is attracted by a brown haired girl at a carnival park which leads him to a group of young gang of teenage boys around his age. Kiefer Sutherland plays the leader of the gang which also includes the actor who played Bill in "Bill and Teds Bogus Journey". This is a legendary horror movie that is a cult classic as it also stars Corey Heim as the younger brother in the family who befriends two brothers from the town, one of which happens to be Corey Haim. After watching this movie again recently, it made me realise how legendary horror movies should be made. Kiefer Sutherland is really young in this movie (as are the the two Coreys') and you can see that he had a great acting career ahead of him with the performance he gave in the movie.

Silence of the Lambs

What can I say about this movie? It has to be one of the most legendary horror movies of all time and they don’t get much better than this. Anthony Hopkins plays Dr Hannibal Lecter who is in prison for cannibalism. Dr Hannibal Lecter is not the ordinary serial killer as he is highly intelligent and was a psychiatrist by profession before he was put in prison. Jodie Foster plays the other lead role in the movie as an up and coming FBI agent who is pulled from the FBI Academy and tasked with trying to track down a serial killer called Buffalo Bill who happens to be an ex-patient of Dr Hannibal Lecter. In my opinion this has to be Anthony Hopkins best ever movie. He is legendary from start to finish in this movie.

Misery

This is a classic film which stars James Caan and Kathy Bates which is based on the Stephen King novel. James Caan plays Paul Sheldon who is a famous author who ends up crashing his car after coming into a blizzard on his way from Colorado to New York. By pure chance, he is saved by Annie Wilkes played by Kathy Bates who just happens to be a diehard fan of his romance novels and who is also obsessed with his books. As the film progresses, Paul Sheldon starts to realise that he would have preferred to have been left dieing in that same ditch that Annie dragged him from. As far as horror movies go, this is a legendary movie that must be watched.

Shutter Island

Shutter Island is an island which has a psychiatric hospital on it. The film was directed by Martin Scorcese and also stars Leondardo Di Caprio in the lead role as a US Marshal who is investigating a mysterious dissapearance of one of their patients. As the movie develops, it becomes more mysterious and further questions are raised. This movie has only recently been released to the cinema but it has the makings of being a much loved legendary horror movie.
